BLGS versus ESC Grand Match Sunday 26th June 2016

BLGS versus ESC 26 06 2016.jpg

Result: BLGS 3 ½ - ESC 2 ½

A strong and youthful ESC team was sent packing last Sunday by the predominantly grey hairs of the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society (BLGS).    Ken P-B tried to ensure that the ESC handicaps were all in order, but apparently some further downward adjustment is required next year (but BLGS won?).

The top match featuring the effervescent Creasey twins went the full distance with the bar bookend combination of Dave and Gordon.      The second match, featuring back marker Rory and Burgess member Peter against BLGS youngsters Tom and Michael, went to Bruntsfield duo despite shots from Rory including the reported wedge he played for his second to the 479 yard 14th (a wedge!).

In the more serene contest involving the Marloboro’ squad of Charlie and Chris, Simon and Jack were still afloat at the 18th but sadly capitulated.

Former longest drive/gorilla winner Chris P-B, ably assisted by veteran Ally Mac recorded the highest margin of victory in the contest, the match finishing on the 16th green.

JJ Tait, persuaded to return after two and a half year’s golf-free paradise, blended magnificently with Andrew Chapman, recovering from 3 down with 4 to play to scrape home on the 18th.      The normally ebullient Ken P-B was heard to mutter something like “Gubbed again…” to his partner Lovat.

The last pairing of Ratho professional Stevie, aided by shamrock Stout squeezed home on the last hole thanks to an uphill 9 footer from the veteran.   The other pairing’s sole moment was the 40 foot downhiller at the 6th from Willie Allenby, precipitating the cry of “a par, a par” form the usually taciturn Nairn resident.

At the post dinner presentation, match Secretary Alastair thanked all participants, but especially late replacements JJ Tait and Jimmy Stout for ESC, and Tom Brownlee and BLGS Secretary Chris Underwood for the home side.    Interesting to note that all four were in winning teams.

BLGS generously donated a fourball, which was won by Rory and Pete, on account of their great yellow ball score, and their being the visitors in the fourball.

ESC also generously donated a Padel Court session, complete with coaching, and this was won by Chris Underwood.

The best performance prize went to ‘Comeback Kids’ JJ and Andrew for their last hole victory (q.v.), while the worst shot of the tournament went to Fraser Macdonald who reportedly put his second shot to the second hole onto the 11th green at neighbouring Royal Burgess.    Thanks to Backer Mackenzie for sponsoring the last two prizes.

ESC Captain for the day JJ Tait presented the new trophy to BLGS Captain for the day Ali Creasey, exchanging short and reasonably congratulatory / consolatory speeches.

Celebrations continued at BLG until the ESC youngsters were thrown out, then reportedly continued at ESC for some considerable time thereafter.

The tennis court resurfacing has been completed. They are currently very sandy. This is perfectly normal as it takes a number of weeks for the sand to brush into the carpet. The more they are played on the quicker they will become nice and green.
